take that objective off your resume take that objective off your resume Last week, when writing about things to leave off of your resume, I mentioned objective statements, which I believe dont belong on a resume. Some commenters wanted to know why.Ive never seen an objective that made me more interested in hiring a candidate, and Ive seen plenty that actually hurt a candidates chances. At best theyre neutral, so why risk it?Objectives usually fall in one of three categories1. Objectives that are all about what you want. For example A position that allows me to develop my interest in international relations. At some point Im going to care about what the candidate wants, but at this anfangsbuchstabe screening stage, the process is about what the company wants.2. Objectives that arent sufficiently tailored to the position, or even have nothing to do with it. For example Writing a job in finance, when youre applying for a job in health care. This objective makes it look like youre simply blasting your resume around without enough focusand that you have no attention to detail.3. Objectives that just dont add anything compelling (and therefore just waste space). For example A job where I can apply my skill set, at a company with potential for growth. Its pretty much assumed that youre looking for that.Heres what most hiring managers want from a resume A concise, easily scanned list of what youve accomplished, organized chronologically by position, plus any particularly notable skills. Thats it. Dont use the resume to talk about what youre looking for, or for your own assessment of your strengths. Present factual information about what youve done.There will be time to talk about what youre looking for, eventuallybut first the hiring manager needs to figure out if shes interested or not.I believe objectives at best add nothing and take up space, and at worst harm your chances. Laurie Berenson, president of Sterling Career Concepts, LLC, advises job candidates who are looking for a remote job to be flexible when interviewing. “While negotiating a flexible job offer, be open to 3-, 6-, and 12-month performance targets and reviews,” says Berenson. “Be willing to come into the office more often (if telecommuting or working remotely) during the first few months to establish relationships and a strong rapport.” Get schooled. Can you really find one that is so enjoyable, it wont even feel like work? Well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration. No matter how much effort you put into picking an occupation, there are days when it will feel like work. But, there will be others when you will think I would do this even if I werent getting paid. The trick is, to choose a career that has many more great days than ones that arent so great. With thousands of occupations  to pick from, to increase the odds of career satisfaction, find one that is a good fit for your interests,  aptitudes, work-related  values, and  personality type. It is also essential that you enjoy the majority of the job duties, the earnings are acceptable, and the job outlook is good. Heres how to go about making a good match. First, Learn About Yourself Your first order of business is to learn as much as possible about yourself. If you think you know all there is to know, the results of a  self assessment  will be eye-opening. A career development professional, for example, a  career counselor or career development facilitator, can help you with this step but dont be discouraged if you cant afford to hire one. Many public libraries offer free career planning services. If your local library doesnt, the librarian can suggest one that does. He or she can also recommend local agencies that offer career counseling.  Instead of meeting with a counselor, there are also  free or low-cost career assessments  available online.   If you attended college, consider contacting that institutions  career services office. As an alumnus, you may be able to access their services. Some colleges and university career offices offer their services to members of the local community. In addition, academic programs that train career counselors often have students work with clients at no or a low cost to gain experience. Next, Learn About the Occupations on Your List The results from your self assessment will include a list of occupations that are a good fit for you based on all the factors it examined, but the quest to find the right career doesnt end here. While some of the occupations may be  nearly perfect for you, others may be all wrong. Even though they are a good match for your personality type, interests, values, and aptitude, they may be unsuitable in other ways. For example, the job duties may not appeal to you, the outlook may be poor, or the required education or training could be more than you are willing to complete. Make an informed decision by  exploring each of the careers  on your list. Read descriptions of the occupations and ignore your preconceived notions. Unless you have personal experience or have done prior research, theres still a lot to learn before you can decide whether a career would be right for you. If after finding out what it would be like to work in an occupation, it still interests you, see what the educational requirements are. If they dont match your educational goals, cross it off your list. For example, if an advanced degree is required and that is not something you can commit to completing, dont choose that career. Likewise, if youve always dreamed of going to college, dont pick an occupation for which you only need a high school diploma. Finally, you will be doing yourself a great disservice if you dont look at an occupations  job outlook. Investing time training for a career only to find out there are limited opportunities when you are ready to enter your field of choice will waste your time, effort, and money. After narrowing down your list to just a few careers, it is time to dig a little deeper. Continue your research by conducting informational interviews with people who work in the occupations you are seriously considering. Parental Guidance We all lean on our parents for support, but please don't bring parental plus-ones to your job interviews. For parents, we know it can be hard sometimes not to lend an overly helping hand and maintain appropriate boundaries, which is why we've written the definitive guide on how not to 'snowplow' your children's interviews. At my old job, a dude came in for an interview and he brought his mom with him to meet the people he was interviewing with. He said he didn't have a car, so his mom had to give him a ride, which is understandable. But none of us could figure out why he would bring her into the interview room with him. /u/ServerGeek Big mistake Sometimes, mistakes happen. In this case, both the interviewer and the candidate were happy to cut things short when it was clear their chat wasn't going to plan. Interviewed a candidate that was sent to me by a headhunter. It became pretty obvious within about 2 minutes of asking questions that she had pretty much no experience, education, or qualification for the job role. For interviews, I predefine a series of questions with a scorecard, so that I can objectively compare each candidate, and have documentation in case my selections were ever questioned. In this case, after about 5 minutes, I stopped the interview, as we had already gone through half of the questions with her receiving the lowest possible score and said that I think she might have been sent to the wrong interview. She agreed and said she knew she was in trouble as soon as I had finished describing the role at the beginning of the interview, but didn't know what to do. She was actually very happy that I had stopped the interview rather than pushing on through the whole thing. We wished each other well and I sent her on her way. I later confirmed that the headhunter indeed did screw up and sent her to the wrong interview. /u/Lokabf3 Getting sick It's smart to skip a face-to-face conversation if you are feeling sick. Any company where you would want to work should be understanding that illness happens, and a serious sickness is a valid excuse for asking to reschedule. Within a few minutes, it was all red and started to swell. She kept rubbing at it and rubbing at it. By the end of the interview, she couldn't see out of the eye at all and a huge whitehead had formed on her eyelid, but the whole time she never acknowledged the problem even though I asked if she was ok. When the interview wrapped up she tried to shake my hand with the same hand she had been rubbing all over her disease infested eyeball from hell. I politely declined. You've got a leg up but nepotism is not a guarantee for any position or role. You still have to do your homework and come prepared to knock the hiring manager's socks off. Was hiring for a data-entry position. Candidate was the man-child son of one of our executives, but had a resume that consisted entirely of bartending jobs. While the position was entry-level and no extensive experience was necessary, the fact that he answered every single one of my questions with some variation of 'I just think I'd really like this job' and 'I'm ready for something other than working in bars in New Orleans' did not bode well for him. At no point did he ever ask about what the position entailed or anything else that might have been important for him to know. I suppose he assumed he was a shoe-in because of his dad. He was incorrect. u/Louisville327 Dress up Hiring managers and interviewers are human too, and sometimes they get caught in unexpected situations just like anyone else. Try and keep your cool, even if something seems amiss. My boss asked me to interview somebody on Halloween. I said, 'I'm dressed like a ninja; can't we do this any other day?' Was told, Nope, do it now. So I did. Poor nervous dude kept twitching like he thought I was going to hurl a shuriken at him. Eating, drinking, and putting on makeup while talking about yourself in an interview setting are not appropriate ways to demonstrate your ability to juggle multiple responsibilities. Not a recruiter, but I am a restaurant manager. We were opening a new location and doing interviews. Woman comes in for a management position. During the interview, she reaches into her purse and pulls out a bag from Wendy's and starts eating. The other manager tells her to put it away and she tells him it is okay, she can multitask. u/Karapan Don't overshare To the point that job interviews are formal and professional settings: Illegal behavior of any kind, or alluding to illegal behavior of any kind, at a job interview can destroy an amazing first impression. This is the story of how one man ruined his chances of employment by asking the wrong question when the hiring manager asked, Do you have any questions?. I was hiring for a sales position at my company. The guy I was interviewing was going great and he was really good and knew his stuff. I mentally had a plan to call him the next day to offer him a job. As standard procedure, the last question I ask is 'Did you have any questions?' to gain insight and also to obviously answer questions. The guy says 'If I offer you a block of hash, will that give me a foot in the door?' The company has a strict no-tolerance drug policy, so I said 'no thanks' and tossed his resume and interview. u/mrsheikh Extra help We know that the Do you have any questions for us? prompt can be one of the most difficult things to tackle in any job interview. Preparing a few questions in advance is unquestionably helpful, but we recommend acting in discretion or memorizing your questions prior to your meeting, rather than what this interviewer did.
