Mobile Veterinary Clinics and How to Start One

Mobile Veterinary Clinics and How to Start OneMobile Veterinary Clinics and How to Start OneMobile veterinary clinics have become increasingly popular due to strong demand from pet owners seeking the convenience of at-home animal services. Additionally, veterinarians are finding that this type of veterinary treatment center is much more affordable to open and operate than a stationary clinic. An article in Veterinary Practice News found that the cost of starting a stationary small animal clinic (including most standard equipment) welches approximately $1,000,000. A mobile clinics startup cost came in at a much more affordable $250,000. The specific items of equipment added to the vehicle has a bearing on the total expense, but the mobile option can be very attractive due to savings on overhead costs such as rent or property taxes. Here are some guidelines if you are a veterinarian looking to establish a mobile veterinary practice Business Considerations Mobile practitioners must, of course, be licensed veterinarians in the state where they practice medicine. The regulations governing the operation of mobile veterinary clinics vary widely from one state to the next.Specific state rules and regulations can be researched on the American Association of Mobile Veterinary Practitioners website.Be sure to obtain all necessary insurance, licenses, permits, or other official paperwork before operating a mobile clinic. Mobile Vehicle Equipment Mobile Veterinary clinics utilize a motor vehicle equipped with special medical and surgical equipment to make house or farm calls.A variety of manufacturers make 18 to 30-foot vehicles (vans or trailers) that can be specially equipped for use as veterinary mobile units.Cost varies widely based on the specific equipment that is added, but as mentioned previously the total cost of vehicle and equipment averages about $250,000. Staffing Most mobile vets employ a veterinary technician to travel with them. The vet tech can provide assistance with medical procedures, answer client calls, and schedule appointments. You should be sure to find someone that is reliable, professional, and comfortable working in the mobile environment. Define a Service Area The next step is to define a specific area within which you will travel to provide veterinary services. You may offer services to an entire town, or choose to focus on a certain portion of a large city or metropolitan area. Some vets rotate their mobile appointments so that they can conveniently service different areas without long commutes during the workday. Mobile vets may benefit from planning visits to farms, community centers, apartment complexes, animal shelters, office complexes so that they can service multiple clients in a single location. This option will save time and minimize travel costs. Coordinate With a Stationary Clinic Many states require mobile practitioners to coordinate with a local stationary clinic so that animals requiring emergency care, hospitalization, or surgery can be referred when such services are deemed necessary. Your mobile clinic may also receive reciprocal referrals from the stationary clinic, as they may have clients that are unable to travel easily, have a large number of animals requiring on-site care, or simply desire the convenience of at-home service. Price Your Services Most mobile veterinarians charge a house call fee on top of the normal costs of veterinary care, which is typically $40 to $50.The vet adds normal exam and treatment fees to this amount. Advertise The mobile veterinary vehicle itself is the best form of advertising, as it is basically a billboard for your services as you drive through your local route. The contact information and logos should be clearly visible on both sides of the vehicle. Mobile clinics can also benefit from having a website, a phone book ad, social media pages, and media coverage in local publications. It is also a good idea to leave flyers or geschftlicher umgang cards at dog parks, pet stores, and other areas where animal owners tend to congregate. Mobile vets have the option of joining the American Association of Mobile Veterinary Practitioners (AAMVP), which offers a searchable Find a Mobile Practitioner database to the public. This is a great way to advertise, and also serves as a professional networking resource. Another great way to promote your services is by networking with other providers of at-home animal services such as mobile dog groomers, pet sitters, and pooper scooper businesses.Reciprocal referrals can be a great way to grow business for all parties concerned, as clients who already use such services are very likely to consider additional options.

take that objective off your resume

take that objective off your resume take that objective off your resume Last week, when writing about things to leave off of your resume, I mentioned objective statements, which I believe dont belong on a resume. Some commenters wanted to know why.Ive never seen an objective that made me more interested in hiring a candidate, and Ive seen plenty that actually hurt a candidates chances. At best theyre neutral, so why risk it?Objectives usually fall in one of three categories1. Objectives that are all about what you want. For example A position that allows me to develop my interest in international relations. At some point Im going to care about what the candidate wants, but at this anfangsbuchstabe screening stage, the process is about what the company wants.2. Objectives that arent sufficiently tailored to the position, or even have nothing to do with it. For example Writing a job in finance, when youre applying for a job in health care. This objective makes it look like youre simply blasting your resume around without enough focusand that you have no attention to detail.3. Objectives that just dont add anything compelling (and therefore just waste space). For example A job where I can apply my skill set, at a company with potential for growth. Its pretty much assumed that youre looking for that.Heres what most hiring managers want from a resume A concise, easily scanned list of what youve accomplished, organized chronologically by position, plus any particularly notable skills. Thats it. Dont use the resume to talk about what youre looking for, or for your own assessment of your strengths. Present factual information about what youve done. There will be time to talk about what youre looking for, eventuallybut first the hiring manager needs to figure out if shes interested or not.I believe objectives at best add nothing and take up space, and at worst harm your chances. But I know some people are firmly convinced they should use themso if you think youve got an objective worth including, tell us why in the comments.

Career Experts Share Their Best Job Search Tips

Career Experts Share Their Best Job Search Tips Career Experts 13By now, you probably have your job search routine down pat. But sometimes you can use a little outside assistance to help finesse your job hunt- and actually help you land a telecommuting job. received great job search tips from some of today’s leading career experts. See how many of these job search tips can apply to your own job search success! Check out the best job search tips from a variety of career experts: Be flexible. Laurie Berenson, president of Sterling Career Concepts, LLC, advises job candidates who are looking for a remote job to be flexible when interviewing. “While negotiating a flexible job offer, be open to 3-, 6-, and 12-month performance targets and reviews,” says Berenson. “Be willing to come into the office more often (if telecommuting or working remotely) during the first few months to establish relationships and a strong rapport.” Get schooled. Lisa Brown Morton, CEO of Nonprofit HR, is a big proponent of advancing your career through education. “It’s important to upgrade your education and skills. Check out what your local community college or adult education organizations offer to help you attain your career goals,” says Morton. “Ask yourself how you can improve your skills, explore new interests, or brush up on technology.” Don’t downplay your skills. Chris Beckage, vice president, North region for Superior Group, a staffing and workforce solutions company, counsels clients to include any and all skills that a potential employer might find intriguing. “For recent grads, dont downplay any customer service experience you have (Walmart, Wegmans, etc.) as these jobs teach problem-solving skills, which are relevant for any job. Can you solve problems? If so, how? What did you learn? Problem solving (along with business skills) is a skill that many employers want.” Always follow up. Chaz Pitts-Kyser, career coach and author of the new book Careeranista: The Womans Guide to Success After College, finds that many job candidates fail to follow through after submitting applications, which is a big job search no-no. “Employers likely get dozens of applications for every job and your email can get lost in the shuffle,” says Pitts-Kyser. “It is always wise to follow up within a week of sending your resume and cover letter with a short email letting an employer know you are still very much interested in the position.” Showcase your flexible working skills. Joseph Terach, a job search expert and CEO of Resume Deli, says that if you want a work-from-home job, you have to prove that you are THE remote candidate for the position. “On your resume, in your cover letter, on LinkedIn, and in your interview spiel, feed your target specific examples of not only when youve worked effectively in a flexible job, but how you were able to do your job better because of the flexibility!” says Terach. “Examples might include the ability to cover several time zones with colleagues/clients, to conduct and record meetings and training sessions given your relatively quiet work space, and fewer sick days taken- all because you can work from home.” Consider the job offer. Heidi Nazarudin, a former CEO turned author, speaker, and blogger, has seen too many eager (read: desperate) job seekers accepting any ol job offer given to them. “Do not ever feel pressured to say yes on the spot, no matter how much you want the job,” warns Nazarudin. “A professional employer will understand that you would want to go over the contract carefully and get back to him/her. This would also give you a chance to renegotiate certain terms (such as salary or a work-from-home schedule) if needed.” Everyone can use a little help when looking for a job, but few can afford a career expert to help guide them through the process. Hopefully you can score some strategic advice from these expert job search tips that will lead to job offers! Readers, what other job search tips would you offer your fellow job seekers? How to Choose the Right Career

How to Choose the Right Career How to Choose the Right Career The old saying find a job you love and never work a day in your life puts a great deal of pressure on people who are trying to choose the right career. Can you really find one that is so enjoyable, it wont even feel like work? Well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration. No matter how much effort you put into picking an occupation, there are days when it will feel like work. But, there will be others when you will think I would do this even if I werent getting paid. The trick is, to choose a career that has many more great days than ones that arent so great. With thousands of occupations  to pick from, to increase the odds of career satisfaction, find one that is a good fit for your interests,  aptitudes, work-related  values, and  personality type. It is also essential that you enjoy the majority of the job duties, the earnings are acceptable, and the job outlook is good. Heres how to go about making a good match. First, Learn About Yourself Your first order of business is to learn as much as possible about yourself. If you think you know all there is to know, the results of a  self assessment  will be eye-opening. A career development professional, for example, a  career counselor or career development facilitator, can help you with this step but dont be discouraged if you cant afford to hire one. Many public libraries offer free career planning services. If your local library doesnt, the librarian can suggest one that does. He or she can also recommend local agencies that offer career counseling.  Instead of meeting with a counselor, there are also  free or low-cost career assessments  available online.   If you attended college, consider contacting that institutions  career services office. As an alumnus, you may be able to access their services. Some colleges and university career offices offer their services to members of the local community. In addition, academic programs that train career counselors often have students work with clients at no or a low cost to gain experience. Next, Learn About the Occupations on Your List The results from your self assessment will include a list of occupations that are a good fit for you based on all the factors it examined, but the quest to find the right career doesnt end here. While some of the occupations may be  nearly perfect for you, others may be all wrong. Even though they are a good match for your personality type, interests, values, and aptitude, they may be unsuitable in other ways. For example, the job duties may not appeal to you, the outlook may be poor, or the required education or training could be more than you are willing to complete. Make an informed decision by  exploring each of the careers  on your list. Read descriptions of the occupations and ignore your preconceived notions. Unless you have personal experience or have done prior research, theres still a lot to learn before you can decide whether a career would be right for you. If after finding out what it would be like to work in an occupation, it still interests you, see what the educational requirements are. If they dont match your educational goals, cross it off your list. For example, if an advanced degree is required and that is not something you can commit to completing, dont choose that career. Likewise, if youve always dreamed of going to college, dont pick an occupation for which you only need a high school diploma. Finally, you will be doing yourself a great disservice if you dont look at an occupations  job outlook. Investing time training for a career only to find out there are limited opportunities when you are ready to enter your field of choice will waste your time, effort, and money. After narrowing down your list to just a few careers, it is time to dig a little deeper. Continue your research by conducting informational interviews with people who work in the occupations you are seriously considering. Getting their perspectives can help you make a more informed decision.

8 Job Interviews That Went Completely Wrong

8 Job Interviews That Went Completely Wrong 8 Job Interviews That Went Completely Wrong 8 Stories of Job Interviews Gone Wrong Mistakes can be valuable life lessons, and it’s entirely possible to learn from mistakes that aren’t necessarily your own. Sometimes people ace their interview and sometimes they mess up so badly that it needs to be shared on the Internet. We searched 'the front page of the Internet', Reddit, and found eight of the best 'job interview gone wrong' stories from all types of hiring managers, in the hopes that you'll benefit from the bad interview signs and snafus. Parental Guidance We all lean on our parents for support, but please don't bring parental plus-ones to your job interviews. For parents, we know it can be hard sometimes not to lend an overly helping hand and maintain appropriate boundaries, which is why we've written the definitive guide on how not to 'snowplow' your children's interviews. At my old job, a dude came in for an interview and he brought his mom with him to meet the people he was interviewing with. He said he didn't have a car, so his mom had to give him a ride, which is understandable. But none of us could figure out why he would bring her into the interview room with him. /u/ServerGeek Big mistake Sometimes, mistakes happen. In this case, both the interviewer and the candidate were happy to cut things short when it was clear their chat wasn't going to plan. Interviewed a candidate that was sent to me by a headhunter. It became pretty obvious within about 2 minutes of asking questions that she had pretty much no experience, education, or qualification for the job role. For interviews, I predefine a series of questions with a scorecard, so that I can objectively compare each candidate, and have documentation in case my selections were ever questioned. In this case, after about 5 minutes, I stopped the interview, as we had already gone through half of the questions with her receiving the lowest possible score and said that I think she might have been sent to the wrong interview. She agreed and said she knew she was in trouble as soon as I had finished describing the role at the beginning of the interview, but didn't know what to do. She was actually very happy that I had stopped the interview rather than pushing on through the whole thing. We wished each other well and I sent her on her way. I later confirmed that the headhunter indeed did screw up and sent her to the wrong interview. /u/Lokabf3 Getting sick It's smart to skip a face-to-face conversation if you are feeling sick. Any company where you would want to work should be understanding that illness happens, and a serious sickness is a valid excuse for asking to reschedule. Our guide to canceling a job interview will help ensure you don't burn your candidacy, too. I interviewed a woman for an IT position. A few minutes in she started rubbing one of her eyes. Within a few minutes, it was all red and started to swell. She kept rubbing at it and rubbing at it. By the end of the interview, she couldn't see out of the eye at all and a huge whitehead had formed on her eyelid, but the whole time she never acknowledged the problem even though I asked if she was ok. When the interview wrapped up she tried to shake my hand with the same hand she had been rubbing all over her disease infested eyeball from hell. I politely declined. She didn't get the job. u/tizod Family affair If you are lucky enough to have a relative or personal connection at the company where you're interviewing, amazing! You've got a leg up but nepotism is not a guarantee for any position or role. You still have to do your homework and come prepared to knock the hiring manager's socks off. Was hiring for a data-entry position. Candidate was the man-child son of one of our executives, but had a resume that consisted entirely of bartending jobs. While the position was entry-level and no extensive experience was necessary, the fact that he answered every single one of my questions with some variation of 'I just think I'd really like this job' and 'I'm ready for something other than working in bars in New Orleans' did not bode well for him. At no point did he ever ask about what the position entailed or anything else that might have been important for him to know. I suppose he assumed he was a shoe-in because of his dad. He was incorrect. u/Louisville327 Dress up Hiring managers and interviewers are human too, and sometimes they get caught in unexpected situations just like anyone else. Try and keep your cool, even if something seems amiss. My boss asked me to interview somebody on Halloween. I said, 'I'm dressed like a ninja; can't we do this any other day?' Was told, Nope, do it now. So I did. Poor nervous dude kept twitching like he thought I was going to hurl a shuriken at him. But he had nothing resembling the qualifications for the job. u/d00d1234 The multitasker Job interviews are a formal setting, not a casual chat with a friend. Eating, drinking, and putting on makeup while talking about yourself in an interview setting are not appropriate ways to demonstrate your ability to juggle multiple responsibilities. Not a recruiter, but I am a restaurant manager. We were opening a new location and doing interviews. Woman comes in for a management position. During the interview, she reaches into her purse and pulls out a bag from Wendy's and starts eating. The other manager tells her to put it away and she tells him it is okay, she can multitask. u/Karapan Don't overshare To the point that job interviews are formal and professional settings: Illegal behavior of any kind, or alluding to illegal behavior of any kind, at a job interview can destroy an amazing first impression. This is the story of how one man ruined his chances of employment by asking the wrong question when the hiring manager asked, Do you have any questions?. I was hiring for a sales position at my company. The guy I was interviewing was going great and he was really good and knew his stuff. I mentally had a plan to call him the next day to offer him a job. As standard procedure, the last question I ask is 'Did you have any questions?' to gain insight and also to obviously answer questions. The guy says 'If I offer you a block of hash, will that give me a foot in the door?' The company has a strict no-tolerance drug policy, so I said 'no thanks' and tossed his resume and interview. u/mrsheikh Extra help We know that the Do you have any questions for us? prompt can be one of the most difficult things to tackle in any job interview. Preparing a few questions in advance is unquestionably helpful, but we recommend acting in discretion or memorizing your questions prior to your meeting, rather than what this interviewer did. If you struggle with the right questions to ask when you get this prompt in interviews, coaches can help. Not an HR Recruiter but done some interviewing. Best one was when we got to the 'have you got any questions for us' portion, candidate said 'oh yeah!' then pulled out a book called 'answering interview questions for dummies', leafed through and went 'ooo, here's a good one!' and asked that. Can't even remember what question candidate asked! u/VanillaVelvet You can't guarantee everything in life will go right 100% of the time, but you can take all the steps necessary to put your best foot forward in every interview. Get Strategic! How to Use Data in Recruiting

Get Strategic! How to Use Data in Recruiting Get Strategic! How to Use Data in Recruiting As a recruiting professional you’ve probably seen a variety of trends come and go over the years.  Whether you’ve been in the profession 6 months or 6 years, it doesn’t take long to pick up on the natural cycles of wax and wane when it comes to a quality talent pool and the number of open positions looking for top-notch candidates.  In today’s job staffing picture, unemployment continues to drop while companies are seeing a steady to slow increase for the highest quality candidates. Another trend recruiters are painfully familiar with comes in the form of industry and company-wide pushes towards leaner business models.  Fewer HR professionals and support staff and less physical resources can make a recruiter’s job more difficult than ever come crunch time. Proactive recruiters know that this combination of high demand and low capability can create a nexus for disaster in the employment game.  When times get tough, as our mother used to say, it’s time to improvise. While these trends have been, well, trending, tech and access to valuable candidate information has also been on the rise.  As the old saying goes, why work harder when you can work smarter? Read below for how to get strategic with your process utilizing data in the hiring process. Location Just as no two jobs are created equal, so are no two job locations remotely the same.  Some states continue to face high levels of unemployment, while others may be exceptionally low.  Similarly, factors such as the cost of living, average commute times and access to public transportation can all make a difference when it comes to the type and quantity of candidates you can expect to see for a new job opening. Savvy recruiters can use this information to their advantage in order to help make the interviewing and hiring process smooth and efficient.  In some competitive areas, you may need to go directly to candidates via online networking platforms such as LinkedIn. If you have multiple offices and flexibility in the physical seating of a candidate you may be able to shift the office location of the opening to meet local or national hiring trends and find better quality talent.  Keep your location in mind and get to know the market in the specific area for the best chance at recruitment success. Industry Trends Another data source effective recruiters should be paying close attention to are industry wide trends for the position they are staffing.  No two industries are created equal so it would only make sense that the contact and recruitment approaches you would use for the individuals practicing within them would vary as well.  Some industries, such as healthcare and compliance, are sorely in need of quality candidates and you can expect to have to search out top notch talent. Look at the overall hiring statistics for your given industry to decide everything from how many preliminary interviews you’ll need to whether you can expect to have to screen numerous candidates to help streamline the hiring process. Occupational Category Maybe the individuals you’re looking for work in high stress positions or in roles that require odd work schedules or long hours.  Doctors, lawyers, accountants and other in demand professionals will often have schedules that make immediate call backs difficult.  This is exacerbated if you’re the recruiter doing the cold calling. Those in the education professions often are home earlier and up earlier, making contact in late afternoon idea. Recruiters can use complex data regarding trending demand, average start times, response statistics and more to help reach the right candidates at the right time.  In some cases you may need to follow up repeatedly and via multiple communication methods or perhaps schedule interviews at odd but accessible hours in order to make the staffing work.  Smart recruiters pay attention to industry trends in data and tailor their approaches to the specifics. Company Priority The last piece of data recruiters should employ is the utilization of the right resources for the job.  A firefighter needs a water hose to put out flames much like an accountant needs a calculator to crunch the numbers.  It would only make sense, then, that the exact resources needed to staff the director level position at your company would vary from those needed to fill an entry level analyst role. Use the return on investment data, salary numbers and overall impact figures of the position you’re recruiting for to help decide which resources to deploy for which search.  A high end recruiter with specialty experience may command a premium referral rate, but the results they’ll have in helping find the next CEO of your organization can be monumental. The bottom line is that data is king in today’s modern recruiting scene.  If you’re a hiring professional looking to provide efficiency and value and deliver quality candidates, a few minutes spent pouring over trends and statistics could make the difference between a hiring home run and a first year flop.

What to Say When Someone Throws You Under the Bus - The Muse

What to Say When Someone Throws You Under the Bus - The Muse What to Say When Someone Throws You Under the Bus You’re going about your day and everything seems fine, until someone on your team says, “Hey, don’t look at me, it was probably her fault!” And suddenly you can’t think about anything else because you’ve just been thrown under the bus for something you’re sure you didn’t do, which makes you want to pull your hair out and head home for the rest of the day. Most, if not all, people have experienced this finger pointing. There are a lot of ways you could respond to someone when they try to make you the scapegoat, but some approaches are more effective than others. And if we’re being honest, the scenarios we daydream about in which we scream at the other person until they beg for forgiveness aren’t actually good for anyone. But there are a few other things you can do in response. 1. Take a Short Walk to Clear Your Thoughts I know this might sound basic, but that’s by design. I bet you can think of a handful of times in which you responded to this situation by running and venting to the first person you could find. And then you located another person to vent to. And so on. Airing our frustrations is healthy, but much like most things that make us feel better temporarily, it’s best done in moderation. And you already know this, but it’s also best done with someone you don’t work with. I’m not telling you not to complain to someone you trust (in fact, it’s a good idea to some extent). But I am suggesting that you try spending a few minutes by yourself first. If you have the time, get out of the building and grab some fresh air. If not, take a lap around the office. Let yourself be angry. And don’t let yourself go back to your desk until you’ve calmed down a little bit. Then, and only then, should you reach out to someone else. (But again, not a co-worker.) 2. Schedule Some Time for the Two of You to Chat If you really want to move on from being thrown under the bus, there are two painful truths you’ll face. For starters, you’re bound to have a really tough conversation with your co-worker. And more importantly, you need to remember that even the nicest tone could make that person feel like you’re attacking them. Unless that person knows to expect a tough conversation in advance. Reach out to them and ask if they have a few minutes to chat later that day about the meeting earlier (or wherever it was that the issue took place- be it in person or over email), or if you’re still fuming, later in the week. Unless you’re dealing with the most self-involved person ever, chances are they know what you want to talk about- and will be amenable to clearing the air. In fact, they might feel a bit guilty already. 3. Avoid Starting the Conversation by Assuming the Worst You could easily start a conversation with this person by saying, “You made me look bad in front of everyone and I hope you get fired for it.” And if you do, you’ll probably end up in a screaming match that results in neither of you feeling great about anything. So when the conversation rolls around, try to assume the best, at least at the beginning. There’s no guarantee this approach will work, but it will absolutely be a much more productive conversation than it would be if you tried playing the blame game. When you sit down with your co-worker, make it your default to put things in terms of how they made you feel, rather than what you noticed he or she did. Try statements like, “I felt like my work was being diminished because of the way you communicated my role in our project” or “I felt like the scapegoat when you blamed me in the meeting for the design delay.” For most people, hearing how their actions affected you is much more powerful than being reprimanded. Think about it: The former puts them in your shoes and the latter puts them on the defensive. It’s never fun to get thrown under the bus at work. But when it happens to you, don’t jump to conclusions. There’s a decent chance that colleague of yours didn’t mean for it to happen that way. And even if it was malicious, you’ll feel much better about the entire situation if you confront it head on. Odds are the person’s less likely to do it again if it means having a grown-up conversation about it.

How to Keep Company and Employee Information Safe

How to Keep Company and Employee Information Safe How to Keep Company and Employee Information Safe Right now, someone within your company may be accessing confidential corporate information either dishonestly or by accident. In the news virtually every week, you read about large, well-known companies suffering from the loss of sensitive corporate information at the hands of employees. Given that Human Resource departments often hold the key to valuable corporate and employee information, the risk of data breaches presents unique challenges for HR. Fortunately, through simple and effective internal threat management procedures, HR can help prevent employee information leaks from happening to their company. These procedures will protect employees most confidential and valuable information from being exposed to unauthorized parties. Be aware of where critical employee information and corporate data are located and who has access to them.Develop an acceptable use policy for all employees that outlines appropriate use of corporate assets and employee information. The policy should also outline the company procedures when a violation takes place.Consistently enforce policies and procedures.Regularly review and revise existing policies to ensure all necessary policy changes and additions have been addressed.Ensure your company has an internal incident response plan and the appropriate resources in-house to handle an incident of employee information or corporate data loss or access by unauthorized employees or outsiders. What Not to Do If a Data Breach Occurs If the worst should happen and your company does experience a situation where sensitive data is leaked or lost, dont fall prey to common mistakes such as turning on an employees computer to check around. Turning on the computer or any electronic device involved may destroy potential evidence. Here are ten common ways a computer forensics investigation is compromised. Company employees: Boot Up the Computer Turning on a computer thats relevant to a case can overwrite sensitive files that may be important to your companys case and change important timestamps. Compromised computers should not be used at all and should be stored in a secure location until it can be handed over to a computer forensics expert. Turn Off a Relevant Computer If a computer is running at the time it is discovered to be relevant to a data breach or investigation, it should be powered down in a way that will be least damaging to potential evidence. The only person that should turn off a suspected computer is a certified computer forensics expert or an IT employee under the supervision of such an expert. Browse Through the Files on a Computer Resist the temptation to snoop, even with the best intentions. HR may know exactly where to look, but its the act of looking that causes problems for retrieving untainted evidence. Browsing through files may cause file times to change which may make it impossible to tell exactly when an important file was deleted or copied from your companys network. Fail to Use a Computer Forensics Expert Your companys IT department is not a computer forensics department. In fact, asking the IT staff to conduct even routine checks into a systems files can destroy potential evidence. A professionally trained computer forensics expert should be retained for the handling of all sensitive data. Fail to Involve All Parties In-house counsel, IT staff, and every business player involved with the case should be included when conducting electronic discovery. Failure to involve all parties can result in overlooked or lost data. Fail to Learn the Lingo Even tech-savvy support professionals may become confused by the expanded vocabulary used by computer forensics experts. It pays to become familiar with the new language. Don’t Make a Forensic Image of the Computer(s) Involved Imaging is the process in which you create a complete duplicate of a hard drive. This is done for the purposes of copying a complete and accurate duplicate of the original materials, with no risk of flawed or overlooked data. Copy Data in “Cut and Paste” or “Drag and Drop” Methods It is true that you can buy an $80 external USB hard drive and copy your data to it. However, this process does not preserve the unallocated space (where deleted files reside) and will change the file times and other data on the files that have been copied out. Wait to Preserve the Evidence The longer a computer is in operation without any preservation, the more likely that the data that is relevant to your companys situation may be permanently altered or overwritten. Always preserve your electronic data the moment you believe that litigation is possible. Fail to Maintain a Proper Chain of Custody Not documenting who had access to the electronic evidence after the alleged incident can lead to problems down the road. Opposing parties can poke holes in the collection and preservation process. They can argue that the data could have been altered on the device while the computer was not securely stored and unused. You can protect the integrity of your corporate data and employee information for purposes of litigation, restoring and protecting against data loss. Just follow the rules shared here to maintain the integrity and not compromise the usability of your electronic devices and their stored data. - Jeremy Wunsch is the founder of HelioMetrics, a computer forensic and data breach investigation company.
