Laurie Berenson, president of Sterling Career Concepts, LLC, advises job candidates who are looking for a remote job to be flexible when interviewing. “While negotiating a flexible job offer, be open to 3-, 6-, and 12-month performance targets and reviews,” says Berenson. “Be willing to come into the office more often (if telecommuting or working remotely) during the first few months to establish relationships and a strong rapport.” Get schooled. Lisa Brown Morton, CEO of Nonprofit HR, is a big proponent of advancing your career through education. “It’s important to upgrade your education and skills. Check out what your local community college or adult education organizations offer to help you attain your career goals,” says Morton. “Ask yourself how you can improve your skills, explore new interests, or brush up on technology.” Don’t downplay your skills. Chris Beckage, vice president, North region for Superior Group, a staffing and workforce solutions company, counsels clients to include any and all skills that a potential employer might find intriguing. “For recent grads, dont downplay any customer service experience you have (Walmart, Wegmans, etc.) as these jobs teach problem-solving skills, which are relevant for any job. Can you solve problems? If so, how? What did you learn? Problem solving (along with business skills) is a skill that many employers want.” Always follow up. Chaz Pitts-Kyser, career coach and author of the new book Careeranista: The Womans Guide to Success After College, finds that many job candidates fail to follow through after submitting applications, which is a big job search no-no. “Employers likely get dozens of applications for every job and your email can get lost in the shuffle,” says Pitts-Kyser. “It is always wise to follow up within a week of sending your resume and cover letter with a short email letting an employer know you are still very much interested in the position.” Showcase your flexible working skills. Joseph Terach, a job search expert and CEO of Resume Deli, says that if you want a work-from-home job, you have to prove that you are THE remote candidate for the position. “On your resume, in your cover letter, on LinkedIn, and in your interview spiel, feed your target specific examples of not only when youve worked effectively in a flexible job, but how you were able to do your job better because of the flexibility!” says Terach. “Examples might include the ability to cover several time zones with colleagues/clients, to conduct and record meetings and training sessions given your relatively quiet work space, and fewer sick days taken- all because you can work from home.” Consider the job offer. Heidi Nazarudin, a former CEO turned author, speaker, and blogger, has seen too many eager (read: desperate) job seekers accepting any ol job offer given to them. “Do not ever feel pressured to say yes on the spot, no matter how much you want the job,” warns Nazarudin. “A professional employer will understand that you would want to go over the contract carefully and get back to him/her. This would also give you a chance to renegotiate certain terms (such as salary or a work-from-home schedule) if needed.” Everyone can use a little help when looking for a job, but few can afford a career expert to help guide them through the process.
